Preparing for a Technical Interview: A Practical Checklist for IT Professionals

Technical interviews assess how you think as much as what you know. This checklist helps you prepare with purpose and present your experience clearly.

Technical interviews can feel unpredictable, but good preparation follows a consistent pattern. Use this checklist in the days before your next interview.

1. Understand the role and the stack

Re-read the job description and note the core technologies. Research the company’s product and, where possible, how its engineering team works.

2. Prepare your project stories

Choose two or three projects you can discuss in depth. For each, be ready to explain the goal, your specific contribution, the technical decisions you made and what you would do differently.

3. Practise thinking out loud

Interviewers want to see your reasoning. When solving a problem, clarify the requirements, talk through options and explain trade-offs before writing code.

4. Review fundamentals

  • Data structures and algorithms relevant to the role.
  • System design basics for mid-level and senior positions.
  • Security, testing and performance considerations in your area.

5. Prepare thoughtful questions

Ask about the team’s biggest challenges, how success is measured and how engineers grow. Good questions show genuine interest and help you evaluate the opportunity.

6. Handle the logistics

For remote interviews, test your audio, video and screen sharing in advance. For on-site interviews, confirm the location, timing and who you will meet.

Working with a specialist recruiter can also help: they can share what a particular hiring team values and how to present your experience most effectively.
