How to Write a Technology Job Description That Attracts the Right Candidates

A clear, honest job description saves time for everyone. Use this structure to describe technology roles in a way strong candidates respond to.

Experienced technology professionals read job descriptions critically. Vague responsibilities, endless requirement lists and missing context are quick reasons to move on. A focused description helps the right people self-select in — and the wrong ones out.

Lead with the impact

Open with what this person will build, improve or own. Describe the product, the users and the problems the team is solving. Context is often more persuasive than a list of perks.

Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves

Long lists of "required" skills discourage capable candidates who match most of them. Keep the essential list short and specific, then add a clearly labelled set of desirable skills.

Describe the environment

  • The technology stack and tools the team uses day to day.
  • How the team works: methodology, release cadence, collaboration style.
  • Work setup: on-site, hybrid or remote, and any time-zone expectations.

Be transparent about the process

Outline the interview stages and expected timeline. Candidates appreciate knowing what to prepare for, and a clear process reflects well on your engineering culture.

Review it with the team

Ask a current team member to read the description. If they would not recognise their own job in it, revise it before publishing.
